Schumacher: Helmet Camera Being Examined

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 04 Januari 2014 | 10.52

A camera reportedly attached to Michael Schumacher's helmet is being looked at in the hope it will reveal more about the circumstances of his skiing accident.

Authorities are examining the device and are also questioning Schumacher's son, who was with him when he crashed, according to French news agency AFP.

Small helmet-mounted cameras have become popular for filming extreme sports in recent years.

Meanwhile, Schumacher's family have said they were "utterly overwhelmed" and "moved to tears" by fans' silent vigil to mark the Formula One legend's 45th birthday.

On the driver's official website the family said: "The incredible sympathies shown today by the Ferrari Fans outside the hospital has utterly overwhelmed us and moved us all to tears.

"We are deeply grateful for it and also for all the heartwarming and heartfelt wishes for Michael to get well soon, which have reached us from all over the world."

The seven-times F1 world champion has been in Grenoble University Hospital since suffering critical head injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday.

His father Rolf and brother Ralf arrived separately to visit him on Friday. His wife Corinna and children Gina-Maria, 16, and 14-year-old Mick are also at his bedside.

The Ferrari team, for which he spent many years racing, bussed in scores of fans from Italy and France to the hospital.

It put a message on its website, saying "Forza Michael," or "Go Michael" in Italian.

"He is tackling the most important fight of his life and therefore we want to send him very special wishes," said Schumacher's old team, as similar messages poured in from around the world.

German former tennis ace Boris Becker wished his compatriot "Happy Birthday" on Twitter, adding "Fight Schumi" in a German hashtag.

Schumacher slammed his head against a rock on Sunday while skiing near Meribel and has had two operations to remove bleeding and pressure on his brain.

He is being kept in an induced coma and the latest health update given by his manager on Wednesday described his condition as stable but still critical.

Visiting the hospital on Friday, Schumacher's friend Philippe Streiff told reporters that the German's life was no longer in danger.

He said: "I'm not a doctor, I'm repeating what Gerard Saillant (surgeon and friend of the Schumacher family) told me.

"Gerard Saillant said it is a serious condition but his life is not in danger anymore now, thankfully."

However, no official statement has been made by the hospital or Schumacher's representatives to confirm those claims.

Accountant Stefano Pini, 47, who arrived at the hospital from Milan to pay tribute, said: "Schumi has given us a lot in the past.

"The least we could do is to come here and support him and his family on his birthday."

French fan Gabriel Klose, who turned up with his 12-year-old son, said: "He is one of my greatest idols. We want him to fight and to return to us."

However, the Ferrari tribute also created controversy.

Some have accused the Italian racing giant - which asked fans to sport its trademark colour red and its insignia - of exceeding the limits of good taste.

The carmaker, which has 130 clubs in Europe, provided about 20 coaches across Italy to bus in fans for the vigil.

But Roberto Luongo, president of the Roma-Colesseo Ferrari club, said he did not want to be associated with an event linked to "a man who is suffering".

"It's very delicate and if I was among those who are close to Michael, such an initiative would not have pleased me," he said.

Egypt: Thirteen Dead In Pro-Morsi Protests

At least 13 people have been killed in Egypt after Mohamed Morsi supporters clashed with police and opponents.

Violence broke out after thousands of people loyal to the deposed president demonstrated ahead of a new hearing in Morsi's trial, to be held on Wednesday.

Five people were killed in Cairo, said a health ministry statement, and the rest died in other cities including Alexandria, Ismailiya and Fayoum.

More than 120 people were arrested for carrying weapons and at least 57 were wounded nationwide as police used tear gas and birdshot to break up the demonstrations.

Protesters in Cairo threw rocks, petrol bombs and fireworks at police during street battles.

Riot vehicle and flames in Cairo Petrol bombs and fireworks were reportedly thrown by demonstrators

The capital's main squares, the site of violent clashes in the past, had been sealed off in advance by barbed wire and military vehicles.

Mohamed Morsi, an Islamist who came to power in democratic elections, was removed by a military coup in July 2013.

He now faces charges of inciting the killing of protesters when he was in power and is also accused over a jailbreak during the 2011 uprising that ousted former president Hosni Mubarak.

His Muslim Brotherhood movement was declared a terrorist organisation in December after Egypt's current rulers blamed it for a car bomb that killed 15 people.

It is now illegal to belong to the group or finance it.

Morsi said he would pursue a moderate Islamist agenda and that the cabinet would reflect nation's diversity The military says Mohamed Morsi incited the killing of protesters

The crackdown has increased tensions in a country suffering the worst internal strife of its modern history.

More than 1,000 Morsi supporters are estimated to have been killed in fighting since he was overthrown and thousands have been jailed.

Around 350 police and security officials have also died in attacks.

Tensions are also high ahead of a referendum on a new constitution later this month which would give the military more power and ban political parties based around religion.

Deadly Blast Rocks Lebanese Capital Beirut

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 03 Januari 2014 | 10.52

A deadly explosion has rocked a stronghold of the Hizbollah group in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Lebanon's Health Ministry said at least five people were killed and 20 wounded in the blast, which sent a plume of black smoke into the sky over the Lebanese capital.

The explosion hit the Haret Hreik district during rush hour and images broadcast on Hizbollah's Al-Manar TV showed firefighters putting out several cars that were ablaze.

The footage showed at least one building that had its facade blown off, and several neighbouring buildings were also damaged.

Explosion in southern Beirut The blast ripped the facades off surrounding buildings

The explosion happened "a few hundred metres from the politburo of Hizbollah" but the political office was not the target, Al-Manar said.

The nature of the explosion was not immediately clear, but a Lebanese security official said it appeared to be caused by a car bomb.

Hizbollah security agents and Lebanese troops worked to cordon off the area to keep angry crowds away from the blast site.

Accountant Ali Oleik, who works in a nearby office, said: "Suddenly, the whole area went bright and we started running away. I saw two bodies on the street, one of a woman and another of a man on a motorcycle who was totally deformed."

Explosion in southern Beirut A man fights to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher

Beirut has been hit by a series of bombs in recent months, including one last week which killed a former minister and political adversary of the Shiite Hizbollah group.

In November, 25 people were killed by suicide bombers at the Iranian embassy in southern Beirut, and explosions have also hit other nearby Hizbollah districts and Sunni mosques in the northern city of Tripoli.

The conflict in neighbouring Syria has polarised Lebanon and heightened sectarian tensions.

Hizbollah has sent fighters to Syria to join the forces of President Bashar al Assad, who is from the Alawite offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, while Sunni Muslim fighters have gone to Syria to fight for rebels trying to topple him.

Bill De Blasio Sworn In As New York Mayor

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 02 Januari 2014 | 10.52

The newly elected mayor of New York City has taken the oath of office administered by former President Bill Clinton.

Bill de Blasio, the 109th holder of the office, becomes the first Democrat to occupy City Hall in almost two decades.

He has promised to usher in a sweeping liberal agenda for America's largest city, and its 8.4 million citizens.

"Big dreams are not a luxury reserved for a privileged few but the animating force behind every community, in every borough," he said.

New York City Mayor-elect De Blasio is sworn in as the mayor of New York City by State Attorney General Schneiderman in New York De Blasio officially took the oath just minutes into 2014

Mr De Blasio thanked his family, supporters and the city for "taking on the elite" and pushing for change.

He said: "When I said we would take dead aim at the tale of two cities, I meant it.

"And we will do it. I will honour the faith and trust you have placed in me. And we will give life to the hope of so many in our city. We will succeed ... as one city."

Mr De Blasio was first sworn in 12 hours earlier at a brief modest ceremony outside his home in Brooklyn's Park Slope neighbourhood.

The 52-year-old was joined again by his wife, Chirlane McCray, and their two teenage children for the more grand ceremony at New York's City Hall.

The new mayor was elected two months ago by a record margin on the promise of making a clear break from Michael Bloomberg, who leaves office after 12 years.

Mr Bloomberg is credited with reshaping New York during his three terms in office, making it one of the nation's safest and most prosperous big cities, but also one that has seen a growing gap between the rich and normal working people.

Many New Yorkers have felt left behind during the city's renaissance, and it was to these people that Mr de Blasio reached out in his successful election campaign.

The progressive politician has pledged to improve economic opportunities in poorer areas, and promised to moderate the use of the controversial stop-and-search tactic by police.

Supporters of the policy say it helps tackle crime, but critics claim it unfairly discriminates against blacks and Hispanics.

AgustaWestland Deal Cancelled By India

India says it has pulled the plug on a £466m order to buy 12 British-made helicopters following allegations that bribes were paid to secure the deal.

The contract, agreed in 2010, has been cancelled with Yeovil-based AgustaWestland "with immediate effect... on grounds of breach of the pre-contract integrity pact", according to a statement from the Indian Defence Ministry.

India had already put the deal for the AW101 helicopters on ice, amid accusations that middlemen were paid to swing the sale.

The corruption claims threatened to overshadow David Cameron's trade visit to the country last February, when the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh raised his "very serious concerns" about the case.

BRITAIN-INDIA-ITALY-DEFENCE-CORRUPTION-FINMECCANICA-FILES Giuseppe Orsi, the former chief executive of Finmeccanica, is on trial

India's Defence Minister AK Anthony said at the time he did not believe AgustaWestland's denial of paying bribes.

And India's Central Bureau of Investigation said it had evidence which allegedly showed alterations were made in the helicopter specifications to favour the company.

The helicopter manufacturer denies any wrongdoing.

Giuseppe Orsi, the former boss of AgustaWestland's parent company, Finmeccanica, is on trial in Italy on fraud and corruption charges over his alleged role in securing the contract.

Bruno Spagnolini, the former chief executive of AgustaWestland, is also on trial.

The former Indian air force chief SP Tyagi, and three of his relatives are among those facing charges in India.

India has named a judge to arbitrate over the cancelled deal, which AgustaWestland is understood to be challenging.

Finmeccanica has said it will defend its position.

A spokesman for UK Trade & Investment said: "We are awaiting formal confirmation from the Indian Government."

United Technologies Corp's Sikorsky Aircraft, EADS' Eurocopter and Lockheed Martin may now be in line to provide helicopters for India's defence forces.

The country has become the world's biggest arms and defence equipment buyer in recent years, and is expected to spend £48bn over the next decade to upgrade its military.

However, arms deals in India have often become mired in controversy, with allegations that companies have paid millions of dollars in kickbacks to Indian officials.

Volgograd: At Least 14 Dead In Bus Bombing

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 31 Desember 2013 | 10.52

At least 14 people have reportedly died in an explosion on an electric bus in the Russian city of Volgograd in the second deadly attack in the city in as many days.

Investigators have described the blast, during the morning rush-hour on a trolleybus, as "an act of terror".

Russian investigators said the bus explosion was caused by a male suicide bomber.

A statement from the Federal Investigative Committee said: "It is now possible to preliminarily say that the explosive device was set off by a suicide bomber - a man whose body fragments have been collected and sent for genetic testing."

Bus Blast In Volgograd The death toll could rise further

It comes just a day after a female suicide bomber was blamed for killing 17 people and leaving dozens more injured at the city's main railway station.

Police identified that bomber as a Dagestan national called Oksana Aslanova - who had been married to two Islamists killed by Russian forces.

She apparently detonated a bomb in front of a metal detector inside the main entrance of the station. Russian television is suggesting there may have been two attackers.

That attack was the deadliest in Russia since January 2011, when a male suicide bomber from the North Caucasus killed 37 people in the arrivals hall of a busy Moscow airport.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, said the latest explosion involved a bomb similar to the one used to target Volgograd railway station. The bomb contained 4kg of TNT equivalent explosive.

He said: "That confirms the investigators' version that the two terror attacks were linked. They could have been prepared in one place."

Investigators and Emergency Ministry members work at the site of an explosion at the entrance to a train station in Volgograd Security has been stepped up after the station blast

President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia's counter-terrorism agency to step up security in Volgograd and nationwide in the wake of the two attacks, the Kremlin announced.

The explosions have put the city on edge and highlighted the terrorist threat that Russia is facing as it prepares to host the Winter Olympics in February.

Volgograd is about 400 miles northeast of Sochi, where the Games are to be held.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either of the attacks.

In July, Doku Umarov, leader of an ongoing insurgency in the nearby North Caucasus region, urged militants to use "maximum force" to disrupt the Winter Olympics, a project close to Mr Putin's heart.

Russian authorities have pledged to make the event the "safest ever".

Sky's Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall said: "It's 39 or 40 days until the Winter Olympics open, this is the opportunity for the Islamic separatists in the Caucasus region to really put themselves on the world map.

"The more this sort of thing happens, if it is indeed them, the more that cause is going to get on the front pages around the world, spoil Putin's Olympics and, more seriously, the more lives it will take."

Known in Soviet times as Stalingrad, and previously as Tsaritsyn, Volgograd is a major industrial centre with a population of more than a million people.

The North Caucasus is the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, bordered by Georgia and Azerbaijan to the south.

It includes the predominantly Muslim Krasnodar Kai, Stavropol Krai, Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan.

Insurgents have carried out attacks on Russian military and civilians following two wars against Chechnya in 1994-1996 and from 1999 to 2009.

The violence has spread into neighbouring republics and even Moscow as insurgents attempt to establish an Islamic state in the region.

Video Of North Dakota Train Crash Fireball

A huge explosion sparked by an oil train crash in North Dakota has been caught on camera, as hundreds of residents were urged to leave the area.

A fireball is sent high into the sky after a train derailed in North Dakota. No injuries have been reported

There were fears of smoke overwhelming the town of Casselton after a number of carriages derailed, starting a series of fires that sent a fireball high into the sky.

Several explosions were reported and people said the blasts rattled the windows of properties in the area, including the town's City Hall.

Cass County sheriff's office said it was advising people in the town - which has 2,400 residents - to evacuate because of concerns about smoke being blown over their homes.

A shelter was set up in Fargo, about 25 miles (40km) away.

Investigators say they are still trying to work out what caused several of the carriages from the mile-long train to leave the tracks on Monday afternoon.

They said it appears to be the result of the train colliding with a grain carriage.

There were no reports of injuries as firefighters brought the scene under control on Monday evening.

Michael Schumacher 'In Critical Condition'

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Desember 2013 | 10.52

Former motor racing world champion Michael Schumacher is in a coma following a skiing accident in France.

The 44-year-old German suffered a "serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," according to the hospital treating Schumacher in the French city of Grenoble.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he reportedly hit his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps.

He was airlifted off the mountain following the accident in the resort of Meribel, in the popular Three Valleys area.

The sports star was skiing with his 14-year-old son and some friends when the accident occurred.

Schumacher's agent, Sabine Kehm, said: ''Michael fell on his head during a private ski trip in the French Alps.

"He was hospitalised and is receiving medical care. We ask for your understanding that we cannot give a running commentary on his state of health.

"He was wearing a helmet and was not alone.''

Journalist Carole Bouchard, from the French newspaper L'Equipe, told Sky News that the racing driver's condition had deteriorated during the hours following his hospitalisation.

The French Mountain Gendarmerie had earlier said Schumacher's life was not in danger.

Speaking to Sky News, Chris Chandler, a consultant neurosurgeon at King's College Hospital, said the immediate neurosurgical treatment given to Schumacher shows his injuries are severe.

Map of Grenoble, France The accident occurred in the resort of Meribel in France

"He could have suffered a diffuse injury to his brain which can then result in brain swelling," he said.

"He could have sustained some sort of brain haemorrhage and if there was a blood clot within his brain or on the surface of his brain underneath his skull, that might need to be removed.

"Sometimes there is nothing actually to remove but you put in an intra-cranial pressure monitor, which basically is an operation that requires drilling a hole in the skull and putting a fine probe inside."

Former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt and Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert, are at the Grenoble University Hospital Centre where Schumacher is being treated.

Mercedes Formula One driver Michael Schumacher of Germany powers his car during the third free practice session of the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix at Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo Schumacher made a comeback to Formula One for Mercedes in 2010

Professor Saillant co-ordinated Schumacher's medical care after the driver broke his leg in the 1999 British Grand Prix.

Schumacher, a seven-time world champion, first retired from Formula One in 2006.

He has been hurt seriously once before, in a motorcycling accident in February 2009 when he suffered neck and spine injuries.

Schumacher recovered sufficiently from those injuries to make a comeback to Formula One in 2010.

Syria: Barrel-Bombs Dropped On City 'Kill 25'

At least 25 people have been killed in the northern city of Aleppo after the Syrian military dropped improvised "barrel bombs" from aircraft, according to opposition activists.

The barrels packed with explosives and metal fragments reportedly detonated in a crowded vegetable market and damaged a nearby hospital.

Video purportedly from the scene showed corpses being pulled from wrecked buildings and burnt out vehicles. In other images, local residents dug through the rubble for survivors.

The Syrian Revolution General Commission, a network of activists inside the country, called the bombing a "massacre".

"The raid targeted a crowded market where people were buying vegetables and home appliances," it said.

"Many buildings have been damaged, and one collapsed."

At least four of the dead were believed to be children.

"We have picked up pieces of children's bodies - they were there with two women and a man," one man said in video said to show the aftermath of the attack.

"Inside the car there were bodies of women with their heads severed. We put the remains in bags ... May God take his vengeance against you, tyrant," he added, referring to Mr Assad.

Hundreds of people have been killed by air raids around the city of Aleppo in recent weeks, many of them women and children, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring group based in Britain.

Rebel fighting to remove President Bashar al Assad from power have control of large parts of Aleppo, but in recent weeks the government has regained territory to the southeast of the city.

Human rights groups have criticised the use of barrel bombs as being an "indiscriminate" and "unlawful" form of bombardment.

More than 100,000 people have been killed since the conflict began with a series of peaceful protests against the regime nearly three years ago.
